Gift of Hope; A Life Giving Gift

Gift of Hope is a not for profit organization that coordinates the donation of organ and tissue, to save lives through those loving donations. That coordination includes; physicians, nurses, transplant centers and funeral directors. The most important people in the process are the families themselves. The loving and generous donations come from the families and the people who make it known they wish to be donors.

Barbara Dolan and Anna Michiels explain the mission of Gift of Hope and how that mission saves lives and offers comfort to families dealing with loss on one side and the gift of life on the other. Barbara explains that the “heroism” of the families, especially those who have lost somebody very young, for extending this gift at a sad and vulnerable time. Anna works directly with funeral directors, who are very much part of the process in assisting in the gifts.

Important decisions are never easy, and this one may be the most difficult there is. And those families and people who choose are heroes whose legacy of life continues through the most grateful people one can imagine.

Our Family turned to the Gibbons Family for both our parents’ funerals

“My father passed away in 1998, and my mother 20 years later. I have 8 siblings. All of us were in full agreement that the Gibbons Family would take care of our mom”, is how Therese Fitzpatrick describes the feelings of her family when their mother passed away.

Further, Therese described in detail the professionalism and compassionate care and comfort provided by Tucker and Marya Gibbons. “Marya didn’t blink when one of my siblings proposed having all 21 grandchildren serve as pall bearers.  She simply treated it as an entirely normal request. We knew it wasn’t. But she simply went along with our request and worked it out”. She added, “Tucker and Marya knew when to advise us and when to step back and let us process through our grief. Everything they did was done beautifully and with such grace and dignity”. Not every arrangement involves 8 people offering input, but when that happens, the Gibbons understand and accommodate everyone.

There was no question where this family needed to go. Because the Gibbons Family is Family.

Our Faith Communities are partners in our commitment to our families.

Perhaps one of the kindest and most concise things a person could say, is what Fr. Tom Paul says. “The Gibbons have a deep understanding of how they fit into the lives of the people of Elmhurst and our neighboring communities.” Tom (Tucker) Gibbons repeats his father’s words when he says, “We are blessed to be in the middle of several wonderful faith communities in Elmhurst, Bensenville, Villa Park, Berkeley, Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace, and so many others.”

It’s our mission to not only make our home available to families to celebrate the lives of their loved ones, but to see it through all the way through to religious rites and funeral services at the cemeteries or memorial services. We work closely with the clergy, ministers, grief counselors, bereavement ministries in all of our faith communities to make sure we are all seamlessly and professionally taking care of every detail for our families. When Visitation Deacon Tony Spatafore says, “When Gibbons are involved, we know everything is going to be taken care of”, or Pastoral Assoicate Patti Riggs says, “They make our job much easier”, that means the world to us. Because their assistance and guidance are vital in making sure our families experience a dignified and beautiful service.

Our combined ministry is a partnership we treasure. We love our community and we love the faith communities within. We’re all in this together.

Gibbons Funeral Home: Getting it Right

People feel stress. You can see it. You can feel it. We pride ourselves on “getting it right” every single time we serve every single family. Losing a loved one is a traumatic experience for people. What our family can do is make sure that all the details of your arrangements are seen to and taken care of. It’s not just what we want to do to help our families, it’s what we’re here to do and we’re supposed to do. And we’ll know. And you’ll know. In fact, everyone will know when service has been performed correctly, professionally, and with compassion. As Marya Gibbons says, “When you get it right, there’s a collective exhale”, and she adds, “everyone there can feel it”.

We can’t eliminate the pain of loss. But we can ensure that your arrangements go smoothly, and your final time to celebrate your loved one’s life, is completely devoted to doing that and only that, while we take care of every detail from the biggest to the smallest. Nothing is quite as humbling as the Thank You notes we receive.

After a funeral service, families continue to be overwhelmed with tasks that need to be completed in a timely manner. Often this is a very important part of the grieving process. Among those important tasks is sending letters of thanks to the people who honored their loved one with their attendance at the visitation, the funeral, gifts of flowers or contributions to memorials or letters of comfort that come from a geographical distance, when no emotional or sentimental distance exists.

When we receive a unique acknowledgement that we made things a little easier at an especially difficult time, it’s a reminder to us as to how blessed we are to be involved in the lives of families at the time we are. It’s a reminder of our responsibility to lift and help carry the burden of a very difficult circumstance. It’s a reminder of what an honor it truly is to be the family that receives a call when a family has experienced a loss.

We’re here. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We stand ready to help families with Pre-Planning, At-Need Planning, Visitations, Funerals, Cremations, Memorial Services or any of the Funeral Services a family desires.

Call or visit us any time, day or night at 630-832-0018 or http://www.gibbonsfuneralhome.com/

Celebrating the Lives of the Loved Ones We’ve Served for Nearly 70 Years

“I am imperfect in many things, nevertheless I want my brethren and kinsfolk to know my nature so that they may be able to perceive my soul’s desire”- St. Patrick

For nearly 70 years the Gibbons Family has invited the families of the loved ones who they’ve served to a memorial mass at the historic Old St. Patrick’s Church in Chicago. Families are notified a month in advance of the mass celebrating their loved one in the month of their actual passing. If your loved one passed away in May, you’ll receive notice every April of the mass of remembrance celebrating your loved one and all of the loved ones the Gibbons Family have made arrangements for in that month. Many people receive several notifications each year of different family members and loved ones who will be celebrated in the month of their passing.

Thomas Gibbons and Anne Gibbons (affectionately known as Grandpa and Granny Gibbons) started this tradition to honor the families they had the honor to serve and to help the fledgling church community of St. Patrick’s which had fallen on hard times decades ago. Tom and Rita continued the tradition as the parish saw a remarkable resurgence over time. As Fr. Karl Langsdorf shares in this beautiful video highlighting the beauty and architecture of Old St. Pat’s Church, Tommy and Anne Gibbons are smiling down on their grandchildren Thomas “Tucker”, Marya, Colleen, Michael and Patrick for continuing this beautiful tradition that has brought people together for nearly 7 decades to remember and celebrate their families.

The Gibbons Family treated us like family.

“When my dad passed away, I called Marya Gibbons at 11 at night. In less than an hour, a gentleman arrived and treated my father and us with such respect, such class, such dignity. He treated my dad like he was taking care of his own father,” said Steve Engebretson. He gently added that everything that followed was just as respectful, just as dignified and just like family. They just made everything so much easier.”

When you lose a loved one, the world can seem upside down and it’s hard to figure out what to do first when there’s suddenly so much to do in so short of a time. The Gibbons family is there to take care of everything that must be done so you can do what’s most important; comfort your family and friends and have your opportunity to grieve and celebrate the life of you loved one. Our family knows exactly what your family needs, and we’ll be there for you anytime, day or night, every day of the year. We promise.
