Being a Veteran becomes part and parcel of who they are.

Kathy Gidcumb’s dad was a veteran. His service was important to him. When it came time to arrange services for Kathy’s dad, Tom Revane,  two things were certain. His services would be held at Gibbons Funeral Home in Elmhurst, and his service in the military would be an important part of remembering who he was and how he lived his life. Tom went on to marry, raise a family, serve his community and parish. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. Marya Gibbons explains that “being a veteran becomes part and parcel of who a person is”. Adding, “we ensure that every benefit a veteran earned through their service is presented to the family”.

Thomas A. Gibbons, Jr. explains that veterans are entitled to an American Flag, an honor guard from their branch of the service, and their burial expenses at a National Cemetery are free of charge for a veteran and spouse. That includes a headstone. Abraham Lincoln Cemetery in Elwood, IL is the nearest National Cemetery. Full military honors are part of every service at Lincoln Cemetery. Added Thomas A. Gibbons Jr., “That moment where you present the flag to a family and state ‘On behalf of the President of the United States and a grateful nation’, the gravity of the service and sacrifice made by the men and women who served is impossible to misunderstand”. Kathy Gidcumb says it best, “It really was done just lovely”.

Once we’ve served you at Gibbons, it raises the relationship forever

The Gibbons Family lives, works and plays in Elmhurst. This is the third generation of the family now providing service to Elmhurst, Oak Brook, Bensenville, Villa Park and other neighboring communities. Tom and Marya have 6 children involved in every activity at schools, parks and elsewhere in town. They both belong to City and Parish service organizations. They are blessed to meet a lot of people around town. It’s very common that when the time of need arises, the Gibbons already have a connection with the family needing their assistance. The relationship with the families change levels profoundly and forever when the neighbors you know from school, baseball, dancing or the grocery store are pressed into service to help you through a very difficult time. It’s an honor and a privilege to serve our communities and become an even more important relationship in your lives.

Gibbons Funeral Home Making it Easier

Holding Hands

The Gibbons family will assist you with efficiency and compassion.

A Friend When You Need It Most

The Gibbons Family has been providing funeral services since 1935. Today, our family is in its third generation of service in 4 locations; Elmhurst, Chicago, Itasca and Hinsdale. We’re continually reminded what a privilege it is when families entrust this most important responsibility to us.

Our family has grown up in the funeral business. Each new generation learned from a very young age that our role in the communities we serve and the families who live in them is special and our interaction with them is often during the most difficult and trying days of their lives. We’re not the only people who provide this service. As in all consumer decisions, people have a host of choices when the time for funeral services arise. At Gibbons Funeral Home, we have continually strived to make our funeral home a place where people will feel most comfortable bidding a final farewell to their loved one.

Helping You through a Difficult Time

We have been in a perpetual state of remodeling over the years to make sure that our visitation area is bright, comfortable, and offers the sense of a very warm and inviting home setting. There are a lot of practical and legal matters to attend to at the time of a person’s death.

The most important thing to a family is seeing that their loved one’s life is celebrated without concern for the dozens of details that must be attended to. That’s another place where you can count on us. The coordination of events with funeral services rarely has weeks and months of preparation. That time is nearly always limited to a few days. The Gibbons Family will assist you in navigating all of the responsibilities with compassion and efficiency, allowing you to spend your precious time where it belongs; with your loved one.
