Gibbons Funeral, Elmhurst: Funeral Services that Fall into Place

“I was checking around. When I talked to Marya, it just clicked.”

Very proud Veteran and Past Commander with the American Legion, Dante Laudati is a very deliberate person. Having been the care provider for his beloved wife, Dante was aware well in advance that he’d be requiring funeral services, and it was important to him that he chose the right place. He went to a number of places in the Elmhurst area, and decided to make a visit to Gibbons in Elmhurst and meeting Marya Gibbons. As Dante says, “It just clicked”. This was the place. “She was professional, kind, and helpful. She handled everything. All I had to do was show up.”

Dante also put his DD-214 Certificate on file with Gibbons so he can choose a time in the future to make pre-arrangements for himself. As a proud veteran, American Legion member and Past Commander, he proudly displays his pins on his cap. Veterans have earned and are entitled to services for their sacrifice to our nation. Marya and Tucker Gibbons ensure that every Veteran is aware of and receives all of those services and benefits. In Dante’s case, having the services recorded and documented in a Pre-planning session ensures that all of those details will be taken care of in advance. For Marya’s part, she loved working with Mr. Laudati, and listening to his stories about his wife, his family, his service to the country and to the American Legion “He is such an amazing man, matter of fact mixed in with great feeling for his family and his service. Couldn’t help but love the guy right away”, that’s her way of saying it clicked for her too!

If you’ve been to Gibbons, you’ve likely met Cookie!

It’s hard for us to come up with a title for Cookie here at Gibbons Funeral Home. Cookie has been here so long, we really feel like we couldn’t operate without him. He handles so many of the important duties here at the funeral home from keeping our environment beautiful, our cars and equipment in tip top condition, running back and forth to get certificates and anything else we need to stay on schedule. He’s kind of our “everything person” these days.

Cookie is part of the Gibbons Family. And the Gibbons Family is part of Cookie’s family. The children have all grown up together, and Cookie is as familiar a sight around the funeral home as anyone else. He knows all of the neighbors, commuters, and people milling about in busy downtown Elmhurst, and they all know him. It’s not at all uncommon to hear people screaming hello to Cookie from down the street when he’s stopping the traffic to get the processions started or waving to every person who passes by. The families at the funeral home know him to be the wonderful man who helps them bring their personal memories or food and bakery items in. He’s there no matter what they need. Tall stool? Call Cookie, he’s got it.

Cookie calls Marya and Tucker Gibbons “the best”. They use the same term for him. Most lovable guy there is. Come and see Cookie.

Gift of Hope; A Life Giving Gift

Gift of Hope is a not for profit organization that coordinates the donation of organ and tissue, to save lives through those loving donations. That coordination includes; physicians, nurses, transplant centers and funeral directors. The most important people in the process are the families themselves. The loving and generous donations come from the families and the people who make it known they wish to be donors.

Barbara Dolan and Anna Michiels explain the mission of Gift of Hope and how that mission saves lives and offers comfort to families dealing with loss on one side and the gift of life on the other. Barbara explains that the “heroism” of the families, especially those who have lost somebody very young, for extending this gift at a sad and vulnerable time. Anna works directly with funeral directors, who are very much part of the process in assisting in the gifts.

Important decisions are never easy, and this one may be the most difficult there is. And those families and people who choose are heroes whose legacy of life continues through the most grateful people one can imagine.

Being a Veteran becomes part and parcel of who they are.

Kathy Gidcumb’s dad was a veteran. His service was important to him. When it came time to arrange services for Kathy’s dad, Tom Revane,  two things were certain. His services would be held at Gibbons Funeral Home in Elmhurst, and his service in the military would be an important part of remembering who he was and how he lived his life. Tom went on to marry, raise a family, serve his community and parish. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. Marya Gibbons explains that “being a veteran becomes part and parcel of who a person is”. Adding, “we ensure that every benefit a veteran earned through their service is presented to the family”.

Thomas A. Gibbons, Jr. explains that veterans are entitled to an American Flag, an honor guard from their branch of the service, and their burial expenses at a National Cemetery are free of charge for a veteran and spouse. That includes a headstone. Abraham Lincoln Cemetery in Elwood, IL is the nearest National Cemetery. Full military honors are part of every service at Lincoln Cemetery. Added Thomas A. Gibbons Jr., “That moment where you present the flag to a family and state ‘On behalf of the President of the United States and a grateful nation’, the gravity of the service and sacrifice made by the men and women who served is impossible to misunderstand”. Kathy Gidcumb says it best, “It really was done just lovely”.

The Experienced Professionals at Gibbons have earned the respect of the local Faith Community.

Gibbons Funeral Home in Elmhurst serves many faith communities nearby. The funeral rites are very important to families. Marya and Tom Gibbons have carried on the legacy of very close relationships with the bereavement ministries within the parishes and congregations in the area they serve. Pastoral Associate Patti Riggs states it beautifully as does Deacon Tony Spatafore of Visitation Parish in Elmhurst. “When the Gibbons Family is arranging the Funeral, every detail is seen to, they know exactly what to do”.  Adds Fr. Tom Paul, Pastor of Immaculate Conception, “They know how to help families who have coped with loss”. Fr. Tom goes back a couple generations with the professionalism of the Gibbons Family and appreciates the ‘complete circle of cooperation’ in ministering to families who have lost a loved one. The partnership between the funeral home, the clergy and the faith community is a vital element in providing comfort, compassion, and dignity to families.

“Our community is truly blessed with so many wonderful faith communities who care so deeply”, says Marya Gibbons.

Once we’ve served you at Gibbons, it raises the relationship forever

The Gibbons Family has deep roots in Elmhurst. Now serving the community with the third generation of the family providing service to Elmhurst, Oak Brook, Bensenville, Berkeley, Hillside, Villa Park and so many other surrounding communities. Tom and Marya and their 6 children are involved in every activity at schools, parks, parishes, community organizations, service organizations and many charitable events.  They are blessed to meet a lot of people around town. It’s very common that when the time of need arises, Tom and Marya are already familiar with and likely friends with the family needing their assistance.

When your acquaintances and friends in the community know you for your involvement first, and then they need the services the Gibbons family provides, there is a profound change that occurs. The change results from two families going through a very important experience together, where one has experienced loss, and the other is there to comfort them and ensure that every last detail is taken care of. Once that occurs, the relationship is even more special on both sides going forward. It’s an honor and a privilege that the Gibbons Family takes seriously to serve our communities and meet the needs of our neighbors.

At Gibbons Funeral Home, we’re available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We stand ready to help families with Pre-PlanningAt-Need Planning, Visitations, Funerals, Cremations, Memorial Services or any of the Funeral Services a family desires.

It’s Gibbons’ Cinema Season for Seniors at the York Theatre in Elmhurst

From May until October, on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, Seniors are invited to see a recently released movie at the York Theater in Elmhurst, sponsored by Gibbons Funeral Home. “We’ve been doing this for several years, and our seniors really seem to enjoy it. Many of them have become friends as a result of getting together for our monthly movie. It’s fun to see them have so much fun catching up and visiting with each other”, according to Marya Gibbons.

In addition to the movie, the $2.50 morning includes a continental breakfast often sponsored by one of the Senior Communities in the area. There’s no sales presentation to sit through, just a nice opportunity to do something nice for our seniors at a very nominal cost that lets them see a newly released movie and enjoy a light breakfast and some wonderful conversation. The doors open at 9am. The movie starts promptly at 10am. Hundreds of seniors have put this date on their calendars for the second Tuesday of the month, May through October. It’s a wonderful getaway and a great chance to visit and catch up on the latest buzz around town and see a newly released movie. “Just an opportunity to do something nice for nice people”, says Marya, adding “It’s a lot of fun for all of us
