Being a Veteran becomes part and parcel of who they are.

Kathy Gidcumb’s dad was a veteran. His service was important to him. When it came time to arrange services for Kathy’s dad, Tom Revane,  two things were certain. His services would be held at Gibbons Funeral Home in Elmhurst, and his service in the military would be an important part of remembering who he was and how he lived his life. Tom went on to marry, raise a family, serve his community and parish. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. Marya Gibbons explains that “being a veteran becomes part and parcel of who a person is”. Adding, “we ensure that every benefit a veteran earned through their service is presented to the family”.

Thomas A. Gibbons, Jr. explains that veterans are entitled to an American Flag, an honor guard from their branch of the service, and their burial expenses at a National Cemetery are free of charge for a veteran and spouse. That includes a headstone. Abraham Lincoln Cemetery in Elwood, IL is the nearest National Cemetery. Full military honors are part of every service at Lincoln Cemetery. Added Thomas A. Gibbons Jr., “That moment where you present the flag to a family and state ‘On behalf of the President of the United States and a grateful nation’, the gravity of the service and sacrifice made by the men and women who served is impossible to misunderstand”. Kathy Gidcumb says it best, “It really was done just lovely”.

The Experienced Professionals at Gibbons have earned the respect of the local Faith Community.

Gibbons Funeral Home in Elmhurst serves many faith communities nearby. The funeral rites are very important to families. Marya and Tom Gibbons have carried on the legacy of very close relationships with the bereavement ministries within the parishes and congregations in the area they serve. Pastoral Associate Patti Riggs states it beautifully as does Deacon Tony Spatafore of Visitation Parish in Elmhurst. “When the Gibbons Family is arranging the Funeral, every detail is seen to, they know exactly what to do”.  Adds Fr. Tom Paul, Pastor of Immaculate Conception, “They know how to help families who have coped with loss”. Fr. Tom goes back a couple generations with the professionalism of the Gibbons Family and appreciates the ‘complete circle of cooperation’ in ministering to families who have lost a loved one. The partnership between the funeral home, the clergy and the faith community is a vital element in providing comfort, compassion, and dignity to families.

“Our community is truly blessed with so many wonderful faith communities who care so deeply”, says Marya Gibbons.

Once we’ve served you at Gibbons, it raises the relationship forever

The Gibbons Family has deep roots in Elmhurst. Now serving the community with the third generation of the family providing service to Elmhurst, Oak Brook, Bensenville, Berkeley, Hillside, Villa Park and so many other surrounding communities. Tom and Marya and their 6 children are involved in every activity at schools, parks, parishes, community organizations, service organizations and many charitable events.  They are blessed to meet a lot of people around town. It’s very common that when the time of need arises, Tom and Marya are already familiar with and likely friends with the family needing their assistance.

When your acquaintances and friends in the community know you for your involvement first, and then they need the services the Gibbons family provides, there is a profound change that occurs. The change results from two families going through a very important experience together, where one has experienced loss, and the other is there to comfort them and ensure that every last detail is taken care of. Once that occurs, the relationship is even more special on both sides going forward. It’s an honor and a privilege that the Gibbons Family takes seriously to serve our communities and meet the needs of our neighbors.

At Gibbons Funeral Home, we’re available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We stand ready to help families with Pre-PlanningAt-Need Planning, Visitations, Funerals, Cremations, Memorial Services or any of the Funeral Services a family desires.

It’s Gibbons’ Cinema Season for Seniors at the York Theatre in Elmhurst

From May until October, on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, Seniors are invited to see a recently released movie at the York Theater in Elmhurst, sponsored by Gibbons Funeral Home. “We’ve been doing this for several years, and our seniors really seem to enjoy it. Many of them have become friends as a result of getting together for our monthly movie. It’s fun to see them have so much fun catching up and visiting with each other”, according to Marya Gibbons.

In addition to the movie, the $2.50 morning includes a continental breakfast often sponsored by one of the Senior Communities in the area. There’s no sales presentation to sit through, just a nice opportunity to do something nice for our seniors at a very nominal cost that lets them see a newly released movie and enjoy a light breakfast and some wonderful conversation. The doors open at 9am. The movie starts promptly at 10am. Hundreds of seniors have put this date on their calendars for the second Tuesday of the month, May through October. It’s a wonderful getaway and a great chance to visit and catch up on the latest buzz around town and see a newly released movie. “Just an opportunity to do something nice for nice people”, says Marya, adding “It’s a lot of fun for all of us

The Benefits of Establishing a Trust

Joe Robinson, an Estate Planning Attorney provides perspective on some of the benefits of creating a trust, which is often used as a suitable substitute for a will. There are important elements of this process to ensure that survivors are benefiting from the foresight of the trust instrument and the trust is indeed offering clarity of direction from the loved one regarding their final wishes. Every situation varies, so when choosing a trust or any vehicle to instruct on your funeral arrangements, seeking the advice of a trusted adviser is always helpful.
